What more can one say about Straubing besides praise? Well laid out, friendly; the much-lauded restaurant is apparently closed for good (?), cleared out. The pilot only wonders to whom a 20-minute wait at the runway holding point due to a missing IFR clearance for the aircraft ahead should be attributed—the pilot, Straubing, or ATC?

Excellent airport, pretty easy to land. Team is friendly and forgiving, willing to explain minor beginner pilot issues instead of threatening with fines. Noise abation rules should be followed, especially with the smallish villages around the airport.
The restaurant is still closed as of March 2026, but honey to buy is always available to justify the trip even if you cannot have a 200 € pizza :)

IFR approach and VFR departure without issues, professional radio comms (AFIS). 100LL AVGAS and Jet A1 available (press green button plus lever to switch pump on, red button for off. Paid with BP card. Pilot license/medical, aircraft and aircraft papers were checked in a friendly manner. Currently construction works, no food available. Free coffee and some couches provided.

Straubing (EDMS) offers both VFR and IFR operations, including RNAV and LPV approaches. IFR arrivals and departures incur additional surcharges, and after-hours landings are possible with PPR, with landing fees doubled for each half hour the airport remains open beyond published hours. Ground transport to Straubing city center is by taxi (typically €10–20), with the city 7–15 minutes away. Car hire via App2Drive is available on site; the vehicle is a short walk from the terminal. There is no direct public transport or continuous bike path into town; cycling requires using local roads for part of the route.
The airfield features friendly, professional staff and efficient handling. Circuit procedures require avoidance of nearby villages during approach from the south. Runway condition may be affected by winter weather; NOTAMs provide current status, and low approaches may incur charges if no landing occurs.
Customs clearance requires advance notification via the airport website; processing is quick and straightforward when arranged in advance. Straubing is suitable for non-commercial general aviation flights seeking reliable infrastructure, maintenance support, and efficient customs handling.
