Civil Airfield Zwickau (EDBI)

by hawaiian air2025-09-08 13:59:08 UTC

Easy-to-find field with a straightforward approach and a grass runway with mats. On departure to the east, limited forced-landing options; on departure to the west, watch for high-voltage power lines—shouldn’t be a factor though. Friendly on the radio and uncomplicated handling, even though you can’t pay on site via Aerops or by card. Quick into the city center; Best Western hotel is a 10-minute walk.

Civil Airfield Burg Feuerstein (EDQE)

by hawaiian air2025-09-07 16:27:09 UTC

Spectacular approach through the valleys to the “aircraft carrier” EDQE. The runway has a noticeable slope; take it into account depending on whether you’re departing/landing or arriving from the west/east. Radio is friendly and straightforward. As of 09/25, the on-field restaurant is open only Saturday afternoon and Sunday at lunchtime during VFR-friendly hours. On weekdays, it’s open only in the evening. Although the restaurant’s website says cash only, on request they provide a PayPal account, and flight operations also offered, if necessary, to arrange a solution via Aerops involving a cash payout. Great airfield!

Long grass runway, easy approach. Aerodrome management also handles the restaurant, so they came across somewhat stressed and brusque, and the passive role on the radio, which only provides general information and does not exercise traffic control, did not seem to have reached EDBS yet as of May 2025.

We were there toward the end of the 2024 season, so no bicycles were available at the field. On foot you can reach the sea quickly, with a wide selection of cafés and restaurants from there. You should be comfortable with short-field takeoffs and landings, and especially on departure identify potential emergency landing fields, as there aren’t many options. Still, a great airfield!

Civil Airfield Reinsdorf (EDOD)

by hawaiian air2025-08-23 21:19:51 UTC

Nice long grass strip in the middle of nowhere, but with a solid restaurant and dedicated airfield owners. Watch for glider traffic to the north. Always worth a visit!

Civil Airfield Halle Oppin (EDAQ)

by hawaiian air2025-08-23 21:16:45 UTC

The GA airfield in the Halle/Leipzig region. East German charm with a restaurant, flight schools, and maintenance on site. Easy approach, friendly people, and fair prices. Ground transport connections are mediocre, but Halle is not far by taxi and from there there are further options.

Civil Airfield Roitzschjora (EDAW)

by hawaiian air2025-08-22 16:05:24 UTC

Airfield in the middle of nowhere in Saxony with no significant transport links. However, there are helpful locals on the field who would surely try to help with any problems. Long and mostly well-maintained runway; lots of parachute jumping operations on weekends. Around the airfield there are opportunities for swimming and hiking. Flying without a flight information officer is in effect at the field; check www.edaw.de beforehand.
