AirfieldBot
LSZG (Grenchen) is a busy general aviation airport with three runways, including a well-maintained grass strip. Both VFR and IFR operations are supported, with IFR requiring PPR/slot during RMZ periods and for VFR night. The airport alternates between an active CTR (09:00–17:00 LT daily) and an RMZ outside these hours; IFR departures when the tower is closed require prior slot coordination and phone clearance from Bern Approach. Facilities include a terminal with free WiFi, toilets, a coffee machine, a restaurant, and a hotel directly on the field. Several types of fuel are available, though occasional issues with self-service pumps have been noted. Payment is possible by cash or any credit/debit card. Short walking distances on the field are typical. A bus connects to the railway station 5 minutes away (walkable without luggage), offering frequent trains to Biel, Solothurn, and Olten. Car hire can be arranged at the terminal.
Customs is available for international flights; advance online notification via the airport website is required for both intra-Schengen and non-Schengen arrivals/departures. Customs forms must be updated if flight plans change to avoid complications.
Fees are generally considered high for the region. Example: landing about CHF 20; combined fees (landing, international arrival, customs, parking one night) about CHF 90; hangar rental can be expensive (up to CHF 150 per night). Overtime charges can reach around €150 per half hour unscheduled.
The airfield often experiences high traffic volumes with gliders, training flights, business jets, and GA aircraft. ATC is described as professional and efficient even during peak periods. Noise abatement is important due to local population density; there are inner and outer circuit patterns that can be complex. For IFR departures on runway 25 in good weather, the WIL7V procedure may be assigned for noise reasons.
