What other pilots say about LOLW
I was in Wels for the Rotax FlyIn for the second time on 22 Aug 25 and would like to give high praise for this aerodrome. The radio comms are very professional and calm despite extremely heavy arrival and departure traffic; there is ample parking available, all types of fuel are available, and the on-site restaurant is excellent and reasonably priced. A taxi into town costs 12 euros and is on site within 5 minutes. I will be back next year at the latest.
The radio operator(s) were still somewhat inexperienced, but with supervisory oversight apparently stepping in, operations worked smoothly even with simultaneous parachute jumping, glider operations on grass, and our powered aircraft on asphalt with VFR and IFR flight plans. Operations, including winch launches, run in parallel—likely made possible by the expansive airfield. Observe the arrival/departure procedures and the Linz airspace both vertically and laterally. Aerodrome operated by the club Weiße Möve; very friendly welcome and service. Fees for a Piper PA28 (<1,2 t): parking per day €12,25, plus a rather high landing fee of €24,90. Catering available. Taxi or Uber to the city or to the Ibis about €15–20.
Wels (LOLW) offers straightforward VFR operations with friendly, professional staff and a welcoming atmosphere. The airport sits just outside the Linz CTR/TMA, requiring attention to published arrival sectors and reporting points; circuit patterns are tight due to airspace constraints, and procedures should be reviewed via the official website or AIP. Coordination with Linz Radar is routine, and both German and English are used on frequency. IFR approaches are not available, but cloud-breaking at nearby LOWL is possible.
The field features three well-maintained runways, a large apron, and ample parking. Both Avgas and Mogas are available via self-service pumps; an RFID tag or chip must be collected from the flight office before refueling. Maintenance support is available on site, including assistance with technical issues and parts sourcing. Hangar space can be arranged when needed.
A modern restaurant is located on the field, generally well regarded for quality and service, though it closes on Mondays and Tuesdays. The city of Wels is adjacent to the airport, offering accommodation options; Linz is easily accessible by train (12 minutes from Wels station) or taxi. Walking time to Wels station is about 20 minutes.
Customs can be arranged with at least one hour's advance notice via the airport website; some reports mention a two-hour requirement using an online form. For local taxi service, Berger Gerald (+436641543100) is recommended.
Landing fees are described as reasonable for the facilities provided. Example: landing about €30; overnight parking about €20.
The airport experiences regular parachute activity and occasional wildlife near the runway (deer, birds). Runway surfaces and taxiways are in good condition. Procedures vary; see AIP/NOTAM.
