What other pilots say about EISG
Straightforward fuel stop en route to Donegal EIDL with a stunningly beautiful but slightly turbulent approach. Very friendly tower controller who appreciates a brief PPR call beforehand and proactively arranged the fueler for us and brought our subsequent flight plan forward. You may move freely on the apron, and after fueling you can settle all fees together by credit card at the small C-office, just a short walk away. The car rental counters at the airfield are not continuously staffed, so you should call the respective city branch in advance to avoid waiting times. €15 landing fee and €2.57/l for Avgas. Happy to return next time with a longer stay.
Sligo Airport offers straightforward ground procedures with no scheduled commercial traffic and full Tower ATC, including non-radar service. Instrument approaches are available at both runway ends, with NDB/DME and LPV procedures approved. Flight plan filing is required. No takeoffs or landings are permitted from 1230 to 1315 local time. The airport is suitable for general aviation, with a 1200 metre runway and a small aeroclub present.
Landing fees are low. Example: landing fee about €20. Fees are payable by credit card at the small C-office, a short walk from the apron. Avgas and Jet A-1 are available, including during the midday closure period.
A café serves lunch from 1230 local time, with options such as Reuben sandwiches; it may close by 5pm. There is tourist accommodation in Strandhill within a 15-minute walk, and Sligo town is 8–10 km away by taxi. Car hire desks at the airport are not always staffed; advance arrangements with town offices are advised.
The area is scenic with beaches, walking trails, and surfing opportunities nearby. The approach can be turbulent, especially on RWY 29 due to wind over nearby woods and hills; circuit entry may require attention to terrain and weather effects. Procedures vary; see AIP/NOTAM.
Sligo Airport provides a friendly environment for general aviation pilots seeking access to Ireland’s northwest coast, with essential services and straightforward operations.
