PPR is required for all arrivals, including for RNP approaches, which are available for runways 13 and 31. PPR is usually arranged via the HIAL website, and a minimum of three hours’ notice may be needed. Opening hours can be limited and subject to change, especially during runway works or weekends; always check NOTAMs. The airport is not busy, with only a few commercial flights per day. FISO operates in the tower, but radio coverage at low altitude can be weak. Payment for landing and parking is invoiced through HIAL head office or by bank transfer; credit card payment at the airfield is no longer possible.
Landing fees for GA aircraft are typically about £20–£30, with parking around £15 per day. Example: landing fee about £20. Parking is on a separate GA apron with hard surface; a car transfer to the terminal is provided on request. There are no facilities on the GA apron and no [AIRCRAFT] available onsite. Avgas 100LL is usually available but expensive, with prices described as prohibitive or exorbitant; supply interruptions have occurred. Jet fuel is not available.
Transport options include taxis (which may need to be pre-booked), car hire (Cresswell Cars: 01496 302 300), and a bus stop outside the airport with limited service hours. Walking to the beach takes about 20 minutes; Bowmore and Port Ellen are accessible by bus or taxi, but both transport and accommodation can be difficult to arrange at short notice during busy periods. The airport’s location makes it suitable for distillery visits and island excursions.
The runway was resurfaced in 2023 and narrowed from 45m to 30m; its condition is good. During construction periods, opening times may be restricted to a few hours in the morning and evening. Procedures vary; see AIP/NOTAM.
No customs or immigration procedures are reported. The airport staff are consistently described as friendly and helpful, but facilities are minimal beyond basic toilets in the terminal building.
