What other pilots say about EGPB
Due to marginal weather, flew to Sumburgh instead of Lerwick to have an IFR approach available if needed. Ideal for practicing crosswind landings. After shutdown, please put on a hi-vis vest and walk toward the terminal to pay the landing fee (20 GBP). The fuel truck arrived shortly afterward and sold us Avgas for 2.93 €. The airport is located well outside, in the south. Overall recommended, with friendly ATC and accommodating ground staff.
Sumburgh (EGPB) offers both IFR and VFR operations, with ILS on runway 27, LOC/DME on runway 09, and LPV/LNAV approaches available for runways 09, 15, and 27. Runway 15/33 has no instrument approaches and requires a circle-to-land. The main runway projects into the sea at both ends, and the western end of runway 09 crosses the A970 road via a level crossing that closes during aircraft movements. PPR is required; notification can be sent to SumbATC@hial.co.uk, with typically prompt responses and comprehensive GA information.
Parking is generally on the main apron or near the fire trainer, sometimes offering shelter from weather. Security escorts are required between airside and landside; expect to be accompanied through security both ways, which can take up to an hour if commercial flights are in progress. Payment of landing fees may occur at the security office airside or in the terminal office; cash payment can save time.
Landing fees for GA including one night’s parking are moderate. Example: landing fee and one night about £65. Another example: landing fee for three days’ parking about £60. Facilities include Avgas (100LL) available by Air BP truck with payment by Air BP card; allow extra time if card machines are unreliable. A cafeteria is located near the terminal for coffee and snacks.
Car hire is available on site from Star Rent-A-Car or Bolts Car Hire, with daily rates around £60. The Sumburgh Hotel is within sight of the airport and accessible by foot via a coastal path.
ATC is described as friendly and flexible, with generally straightforward procedures for customs and immigration when required. Paths between aircraft parking and the terminal are short, typically around 100–300 meters.
Sumburgh is suitable for non-commercial GA flights seeking reliable IFR access to Shetland with practical ground facilities and scenic surroundings.
