What other pilots say about EDTZ
The city of Konstanz is a charming and scenic destination, right by the lake, with an Alpine panorama view in the background on a clear day. Likewise its surroundings: the artistic garden island Mainau, the romantic castle at Meersburg (ferry across the lake), and many other picturesque places. Top accommodation: RIVA Hotel, or Steigenberger Inselhotel, both right by the lake in walking distance to historic town centre. Very relaxed atmosphere and perfect springboard to cross the Alps in the morning (to avoid convective turbulence). Every hour a catamaran shuttle departs to Friedrichshafen offering a beautiful 50 minutes journey, which makes Konstanz also a good overnight spot for visiting AERO trade show. Alas, last return ferry departs 19:00. However, the 760m grass runway is quite bumpy, with obstacles both ends, and after extensive rain periods tends to be rather squashy. So before going there do enquire current RWY conditions! There's no restaurant - just beverages on sale at the TWR. But there are many very scenic restaurants and coffee places in the historic centre by the lake, just 15 minutes taxi ride away (taxis plentiful). There is also a bus, and plenty of bicycles for rent at the TWR.
EDTZ offers a scenic location near Lake Constance with straightforward VFR operations and a welcoming atmosphere. The grass runway and taxiways are frequently described as uneven, with notable holes, soft spots after rain, and occasional molehills; caution is advised, especially in wet conditions or after heavy rainfall. Some areas may have deep ruts from aircraft, and the parallel grass taxiway is often rough. Precise adherence to the circuit pattern is recommended, particularly for noise abatement on runway 30, which requires a tight circuit and continuous turn from downwind to final in certain wind conditions.
Service at the airfield is consistently friendly and helpful. Bicycles are available for rent at about €6 per day, though their condition varies; typically 10–20 bikes are ready for use without tools. The airfield is a popular starting point for trips into Konstanz (about 4 km away) or to the island of Reichenau. The city center can be reached by bus (line 6) from the Byk-Gulden-Strasse stop, approximately 1 km from the tower, with a travel time of around 18 minutes; taxi rides to downtown cost about €20. Walking to the lake or city center takes 7–20 minutes depending on destination.
Landing fees are low. Example: landing fee about €20. Overnight parking is available outdoors but tie-down points are limited; hangar space is rarely available. Fuel is available on site but may require assistance if issues arise during refueling.
There is no on-field restaurant, but staff can recommend local dining options in Konstanz or along the lakeside. The area offers excellent opportunities for cycling and sightseeing.
The airfield’s suitability for non-commercial general aviation remains high, but pilots should be prepared for variable grass surface conditions and limited infrastructure. Procedures vary; see AIP/NOTAM.
