What other pilots say about LSGS
Parking a bit away from the terminal, but call the airport to get a bus to carry you and your luggage. Ultra friendly. Note there is a traffic control fee (sky guide) in addition to the landing fee for each movement.
Sion Airport offers efficient operations with friendly and professional ATC and ground staff. VFR and IFR arrivals are possible; IFR approaches require a specific pilot qualification, which can be obtained via an online briefing and test as detailed in the Swiss AIP. Handling is not mandatory below 3 tonnes MTOW. Circuits are typically flown at 2,700’ QNH for singles, with 4,000’ QNH for multis. Experience with mountain flying is advisable due to rapidly changing wind and weather conditions in the Rhône valley.
Landing fees are generally moderate for Switzerland. Example: landing fee about CHF 20–35, with a Skyguide/ATC fee around CHF 20–25; passenger tax about CHF 8 per person applies for international flights. Parking is usually free for up to five hours, with overnight parking charged separately. Example: overnight parking about CHF 10 per day. No separate customs fee is charged; customs/immigration is available on site, with prior notification via a simple PDF form sent by email.
Fuel (100LL and 91UL) is delivered promptly by truck; payment is made together with landing fees at the C office, where staff speak French and some German. Parking areas are ample, with chocks available to borrow. Parking may be some distance from the terminal (up to 200 meters); a shuttle bus can be requested by radio or phone.
A restaurant with terrace overlooks the runway; prices vary, with more affordable options on the terrace than inside. Rental cars are available from Hertz and Europcar. The city bus stops near the terminal every 30 minutes, or it is a 15–20 minute walk to Sion train station.
Hi-viz vests are recommended on the apron. Approaches require careful planning due to terrain; turbulence and strong valley winds may occur, especially in the circuit or when approaching from Martigny or over mountain passes. For all operational details and current requirements, see AIP/NOTAM.
Sion is well-suited for non-commercial general aviation flights seeking access to Valais resorts or alpine flying experiences, combining efficient service with good facilities and reasonable charges.
