Pilot Comments for LIRU
Achim
IFR approach exactly as described in the AIP: either cancel IFR, or fly the ILS into LIRA and then cancel. The entry points are essential. Lengthy passport control in both directions. Since the office was unstaffed, put aircraft details into an overflowing mailbox. The drive into the city is very quick. Good GA airfield!

LIRU (Rome Urbe) is a convenient airport for general aviation, located close to the city center with taxi rides typically costing €20–€30 and taking 7–30 minutes depending on traffic. Uber and taxi apps function well, and there is a train station across the road, though most pilots use taxis for city access. The airport features a modern terminal with air conditioning, a café/bar (open most days), and built-in tie-down loops on the north apron; parking is on hard surfaces with anchor points available. WiFi is available in the café upon request.
VFR and IFR operations are both supported, but careful preparation of approach and departure procedures is essential due to complex VFR reporting points and late handover from Roma Information to Urbe Tower. IFR arrivals often require canceling IFR at or before URB NDB or using Ciampino’s ILS followed by VFR into LIRU. On departure, IFR pickup may be delayed until well outside the city; expect low-level VFR flight under the TMA before clearance. For international flights (including intra-Schengen), AIP AD2 LIRU 6.3 requires notifying customs at least 90 minutes in advance using +39 0679340122; enforcement varies, but fines for non-compliance can be substantial.
PPR is required at least 90 minutes prior to arrival and departure for flights to or from non-Italian aerodromes; call +39 0679340122. Procedures vary; see AIP/NOTAM.
Refueling is available but often slow and inconvenient: the fuel station is on the opposite side of the runway, requiring crossing with frequent waits in holding bays if another aircraft is being serviced. Only one aircraft can refuel at a time, and paperwork can be lengthy even when paying by card. Refueling may take up to an hour or more, especially near closing time or if multiple aircraft are waiting. Example: avgas prices about €4/liter.
Fees are generally moderate for a capital city airport. Example: landing plus several days’ parking about €60; another example: landing plus two days’ parking about €60.
The airport uses self-declaration forms when offices are closed; forms are left in designated trays for later billing by post or email. No handling is required. There are no PAPI lights or landing aids on the runway.
Customs/immigration procedures are straightforward for EU/Schengen flights, though official notification requirements exist as noted above. Police presence varies; sometimes no officer is present at departure.
Overall, LIRU offers excellent access to Rome with professional ATC and good facilities but requires careful procedural preparation and patience with fueling logistics.
