Santander (LEXJ) is a commercial airport accommodating general aviation with generally relaxed procedures and friendly, efficient staff. VFR and IFR arrivals are straightforward, with controllers described as helpful even during busy periods. Handling is now mandatory, typically arranged in advance via email with the airport or a handling agent; United Aviation provides efficient service and coordinates customs when needed. Handling includes short transport (about 100 meters) by vehicle between parking and the terminal.
GA parking is limited, so advance coordination is recommended. Payment for landing and parking is made at the operations office on the first floor of the terminal; this area also handles flight plan filing and confirmation. A stamped flight plan is required to pass security for return to the aircraft. Security procedures are generally quick, taking about 15 minutes without queues.
Landing and parking fees for a typical GA stop (landing plus six days parking) are about €200, with an additional handling/security charge of about €20. Example: landing plus six days parking about €200; handling/security about €20. Payment methods include BP card or EC card for fuel; cash may be required in some cases. Avgas is available but requires a VAT number for purchase; staff may assist if needed.
Fueling is generally prompt, but delays can occur if the fueler is busy with airline traffic. The GA apron has tie-downs available. Car hire is possible directly outside the terminal, though prices can be high without advance booking.
Customs and Schengen exit procedures are handled efficiently by the handling agent when required. For all operational details and any procedural changes, see AIP/NOTAM.
Santander offers a practical stop for GA flights in northern Spain, suitable for both technical stops and short visits into town.
