Handling is mandatory for general aviation, with several agents available. Fees are high, especially for handling and security; total costs can exceed €1000 for a short stay, with individual examples showing landing about €180–€190, handling about €90–€120, and security about €240. Example: total charges for landing, handling, and security about €600. Another example: two nights parking and associated fees about €1000. Lower fees were reported in the past, but current charges are consistently described as high.
A separate GA terminal exists, located about half a mile from the main terminal. Parking is available at the GA terminal or on a northern apron; space is generally sufficient. Handling agents can provide shuttle service to local car rental firms offering a range of vehicles. Walking distance to the main terminal is possible.
Fuel is available by bowser truck; payment by Shell Card is accepted. Refueling can take 30–60 minutes and may be delayed due to operational issues.
IFR arrivals use standard STARs from the north via MAR VOR; ILS DME approaches are available for runways 32 (over sea) and 14 (over terrain). No slot time is required for departures. ATC is generally helpful but radio communication can be challenging due to accent and waypoint pronunciation; setting radio volume high and anticipating instructions is recommended.
VFR procedures along the southern coastal route are often not permitted or practical. The airport is busy, with significant traffic at times. Procedures vary; see AIP/NOTAM.
Security procedures include a per-passenger security tax when crossing through screening in either direction.
Overall, Malaga (LEMG) offers full facilities for general aviation but at high cost, with mandatory handling and notable security surcharges.
