Pilot Comments for EHGG

On weekends, even in perfect weather, there’s almost no traffic (the flight schools aren’t active then, there are very few charter flights, and private flying there is also minimal). In that case those odd published arrival and departure routes are usually not used, and practically everyone can, on request, proceed direct on course inbound and outbound. On weekdays there is sometimes heavy training traffic, including IFR, which means approaches often alternate in opposite directions, etc. The landing fee for an SR22 (1.6 t) is now just over €50, plus a hefty approach fee. App2Drive is still available on the field. If you only need to get into Groningen, it’s much cheaper to take the bus. Google or Apple Maps will help you find the bus stop and the schedules. You can buy the ticket on board (you check in with a debit card when boarding and check out when getting off). A walk around the old town along the water is particularly worthwhile; there are also guided walking tours.

EHGG (Groningen Eelde) is a friendly and generally relaxed airport with low traffic outside of flight training periods, which are frequent due to the KLM flight academy based on site. Both VFR and IFR procedures are straightforward, with ILS and LPV approaches available; ATC is flexible and helpful, often accommodating direct arrivals or departures on request when traffic permits. VFR arrivals involve some unique published routes, but deviations are often possible after coordination. Startup clearance from Eelde Delivery is required for departure, including VFR.
Landing fees for GA aircraft typically range from about €30 to €50, with additional approach charges in some cases. Example: landing and parking about €50. Parking charges generally apply after six hours. Fuel (Jet-A and 100LL) is available via self-service pumps that accept standard credit cards; fuel prices are described as high. No mogas or UL91 is available. App2Drive car sharing operates at the field, but traditional rental cars must be pre-booked and are often expensive if arranged at the airport; more affordable options exist in Groningen city, with return at the airport possible without surcharge.
A bus stop for line 9 is about five minutes' walk from the terminal, offering a direct connection to Groningen central station for around €6 per trip; taxis to the city cost around €40 one way. Bicycling into Groningen is also feasible and pleasant.
Facilities include a restaurant/café in the terminal, WiFi at the ops office, and tie-downs on grass available on request. The airfield and apron are well maintained. Customs and immigration are available without prior notice for Schengen/non-Schengen flights; however, it is essential to distinguish between customs and immigration officers when clearing out—failure to check out properly can result in significant fines. Police may perform passport checks at aircraft for arrivals from outside Schengen; GENDEC forms can be completed on arrival if needed.
Procedures vary; see AIP/NOTAM. Overall, EHGG offers good facilities and service for non-commercial GA flights, though fees and fuel costs are relatively high by local standards.
