Juist is the longest of the Frisian Isles in Germany. A big part of the island's attraction is that motor vehicles are banned; just horse drawn carriages and bicycles. Hence, this super relaxed place offers quiet, nature, beaches, sand dunes, wild seals and sea lions, plenty of birds, a startling night sky, and very friendly people.

The only village can be best reached by taking a one hour walk from the airfield along the North Sea beach. Luggage transport can be arranged by phone. There are also rental bikes at the airfield. The airfield has a 700m paved RWY 07/25, paved taxiway, and good grass parking (bring tie-down gear). No fuel. Very reasonable fees. Friendly restaurant with airside facing windows and terrace. And it's only 250 m to the beach! The village is 4 km by beach (alternatively road). You might take a rest half-way at Cafe Wilhelmshohe, with panoramic views.

Recommended accommodation: Strandhotel Kurhaus (ask for north facing room), and Hotel Achterdiek (at south shore) - both welcome dogs. The village has some fine restaurants just inside of the dunes. To get to the western parts of the island you may rent a bike (or cargo bike for the dog). BTW dogs tend to love this island, its beaches and sea surf - so don't forget to bring a very long trailing leash, floatable toys, and avoid the main beach by the village.

The East Friesian Islands: 5 of the 7 are hard runway airfields, on the barren north shoulder of Germany. It is still a place apart – overwhelmingly rural, and unscathed by tourism. It is an isolated patch of land where both Holland to the west and Germany to the east seem like foreign lands.

See my posting on Nordeney where I make comments/advice about visiting The Friesian Islands themselves https://airfield.directory/airfield/EDWY

EDWJ Juist: A small airfield with a big welcome and a good restaurant! They have a good German web site http://www.edwj.de/. For such a small field there is even a web cam. There are often plenty of bikes/e-bikes for rental. Wonderful beaches are only 10 minutes away. The Landing Fee is a little more than the other islands because it contains a Tourist tax.

EDWJ (Juist) is a popular, professionally run airfield with friendly and helpful staff. The paved runway and taxiways are in good condition, though some parking areas can be uneven; slow taxi recommended. The airfield is open all day, including weekends and winter months, with no midday closure. VFR operations are standard; IFR arrivals are possible with PPR. Approaches can be affected by turbulence and wind shear due to the high dune near runway 26, especially with NW winds; a higher and longer final is advisable to avoid wake effects. For departures from 26, an early right turn is expected.

The beach is 5–10 minutes on foot from the airfield. The town center is about 4–4.5 km away, reachable in roughly one hour on foot or by renting bicycles directly at the airfield for €10 per day (e-bikes about €25 per day). Bicycle availability can vary during busy periods. Horse-drawn carriages provide transport to town for about €20 per person each way; these operate on a limited schedule and are slow compared to cycling or walking.

A restaurant at the airfield offers both Nepali and German dishes, with mixed reviews regarding flexibility and menu options. Additional dining options such as Café Wilhelmshöhe are located between the airfield and town. Overnight accommodation can be arranged through the staff, including rooms at the nearby Jugendbildungsstätte ("Jubi").

Landegebühren (landing fees) are generally at the higher end for North Sea islands but considered reasonable for the location. Example: landing fee about €30 for an aircraft around 1500 kg MTOW; overnight parking is low-cost (about €5 per day). Payment is typically cash only; card payment may not be available.

No fuel is available at EDWJ. The island is car-free; all ground transport uses bicycles or horse-drawn carriages. Camping anywhere on Juist is prohibited.

Customs checks may occur without prior notice; carry all required documents including customs clearance if applicable.

Juist offers a scenic destination with excellent beach access, efficient operations, and good facilities for general aviation pilots seeking a relaxed island experience.
