What other pilots say about EDWG
The East Friesian Islands: 5 of the 7 are hard runway airfields, on the barren north shoulder of Germany. It is still a place apart – overwhelmingly rural, and unscathed by tourism. It is an isolated patch of land where both Holland to the west and Germany to the east seem like foreign lands.
See my posting on Nordeney where I make comments/advice about visiting The Friesian Islands themselves https://airfield.directory/airfield/EDWY
EDWG Wangerooge: The furthest east of the Friesian Islands and very noise and environmentally sensitive. For a small field, another informative web site http://www.edwg.de/ + webcam.
There is a 10% Landing reduction if you use the Aerops app.
If the Airport restaurant is closed, there are many eateries in the village. Recommended are: Cafe & Restaurant Pudding" the sea promenade; and restaurant Snabbelkraam.
EDWG offers a relaxed and friendly atmosphere with consistently helpful staff and efficient service. The airport is located directly adjacent to the town, with walking distances of 5–15 minutes to the center and 2–10 minutes to the beach. Both grass and asphalt parking are available; grass parking is extensive but may require PPR after heavy rain due to limited availability, while asphalt spots are more limited. Hangar space is generally available on request. No fuel is available at EDWG; the nearest fuel is at EDWI, about 10 minutes away by air.
Strict opening hours apply: departures until 12:00, arrivals until 13:00, then closed until 15:00 local time (midday break); plan accordingly, as starting engines before 15:00 after the break is not permitted. PPR may be required for parking during wet conditions or for certain aircraft categories; confirmation should be checked before departure. Payment via Aerops app offers a discount on landing fees.
Landing fees are described as moderate or fair. Example: landing fee about €20. Overnight parking ranges from €6–10. A tourist tax of about €4 per person is payable at a separate counter. Facilities include an on-field hotel and restaurant, briefing room with computer access, and WiFi. Bike rental is available nearby but not directly at the airport.
The island has no cars, making it quiet and easily explored by foot or bicycle. The airport can be busy in summer with frequent commercial flights; maintain vigilance for intensive traffic around the islands and note that commercial operators may not always follow standard circuit procedures or appear on traffic displays. For runway 28, maintain a higher approach due to possible pedestrians on the dike; strong winds can make landings challenging.
Customs clearance from Switzerland is possible with prior notice. For information or PPR requests, contact +49 4469 344 or see www.edwg.de.
EDWG is well-suited for non-commercial general aviation pilots seeking easy access to Wangerooge’s town and beaches, provided operational hours and parking constraints are observed.
