Coburg-Brandensteinsebene (EDQC) is a well-maintained, friendly airfield with a spectacular approach, especially to runway 12 past the Veste Coburg. The declared runway length is 632 m, but additional paved areas at both ends are designated as taxiway for noise reasons; these can be used for taxiing to the threshold, providing ample space for takeoff and landing. The airfield operates with PPR outside published hours and on Sundays; late arrivals require advance PPR and incur a surcharge of €52 per half hour. IFR approaches are available, with an additional fee for instrument procedures.
Landing fees for typical GA aircraft range from about €20 to €40, with several examples: Example: landing fee about €30. IFR approach surcharges apply, e.g., about €24. Fuel (Avgas and Jet A1) is self-serve at a paved pad; payment is made at the tower. No Mogas is available.
Facilities include a simple but affordable on-field restaurant (Fliegerklause) with outdoor seating under trees and a beer garden atmosphere; it can be busy or closed outside weekends. The airfield offers good parking options and occasional hangar space by arrangement. Accommodation in town can be arranged via the tower.
The Veste Coburg fortress is 7–15 minutes on foot from the airfield; the historic city center is 20–30 minutes’ walk downhill (return uphill takes longer), or accessible by bus or taxi. Bus line 5 stops near runway 12; taxis are available, with some variability in wait times and service quality.
The approach can be challenging due to crosswinds, turbulence, and the sloped runway—especially on runway 12—so attention to PAPI guidance and wind conditions is advised. Noise abatement procedures influence both operations and fee structure; see AIP/NOTAM for details.
Customs/immigration is possible with advance notice; actual presence of officials may vary. For official information: Tel. 09561 790560, www.edqc.de.
EDQC offers an attractive destination or technical stop for non-commercial GA flights, combining professional handling with scenic surroundings and convenient access to Coburg’s sights.
