What other pilots say about EDLE
Be aware of glider flying in southern part of aerodrome! There’s an ATZ surrounding EDLE. Check AIP, charts, etc. Hangar space is against AI text not really available. Maybe you get lucky but don’t count on it!
EDLE offers a wide, long (45m) hard runway with well-maintained operational areas and is suitable for both VFR and IFR departures (IFR pickup typically via Bottrop/BAM; see AIP/NOTAM for procedures). The airport is uncontrolled, with circuit altitude at 1400 ft; Düsseldorf CTR and airspace C begin at 1500 ft directly above, and D airspace starts about 0.5 NM west—strict adherence to published circuits is essential. Traffic can be high on weekends but remains orderly. PPR is required outside published hours and incurs higher fees.
Landing fees are generally moderate, with examples ranging from about €15–20 for typical GA aircraft, though higher fees (about €40) may apply depending on noise certification or at peak times. Example: landing fee about €20. Card payment at an automated terminal is available. Overnight parking is possible, sometimes bundled with landing for around €30.
All fuel types, including UL91, are available. Maintenance services are present on the field. Hangar space for visitors is often available at reasonable rates.
A restaurant with breakfast buffet and terrace overlooks the apron and is recommended; opening hours may be limited. The airport staff are consistently described as friendly and helpful.
Car hire via app-based services (e.g., app2drive) has been available but may vary; taxis can be called from the C-office as the stand outside may be empty. Essen city center is about 10 km away—typically reached in 12–30 minutes by taxi or car; public transport connections exist but are less convenient, with bus/tram travel to Essen taking up to 40 minutes.
Customs/immigration can be arranged on request through the C-office for flights to/from non-Schengen countries; advance notice is recommended.
Noise certificate requirements affect fee levels; increased surcharges apply without German noise documentation even if aircraft meet standards elsewhere. Night operations are supported by runway lighting but taxiways lack illumination—exercise caution after dark.
EDLE provides efficient GA access to the Ruhr area without major-airport procedures, but circuit discipline and airspace awareness are critical due to proximity of Düsseldorf’s controlled airspace.
