What other pilots say about BIRK
It's not only a very expensive airport, the service is has become pretty poor. I have landed twice there in July and the Reyjkavik FBO which used to be the new kid in town is now the only FBO. First time we were "forgotten" and waited for 20min for transportation and the second time they claimed we had not sent a request and Gendec before which we did (and even had email exchanges) but still had to fill out the Gendec form manually again (instead of the FBO fetching the printout from the office). Overnight stay with a 3.4t airplane 500 € total cost. I hope that another FBO will open soon and competition will make sure service is restored to an acceptable level.
BIRK (Reykjavik Airport) offers efficient handling and parking, with a hotel located directly across from the handling agent and within 20–300 meters of the terminal. The airport is highly convenient for access to Reykjavik city, with walking times to the center ranging from 10 to 20 minutes and car journeys about 10 minutes. Handling is mandatory, and all operations are subject to significant fees: handling typically about €230, customs about €300, and technical stops for under one hour can total around €600. Example: handling fee about €230. Example: customs fee about €300. Example: landing fee about €40. Example: parking fee about €40. Example: navigation fee about €20.
Customs surcharges apply for crew-only arrivals outside weekday hours and for all arrivals with passengers; see AIP/NOTAM for details. The airport is considered GA-friendly, with straightforward IFR procedures similar to other European destinations; VHF coverage is good on North Atlantic routes. Fuel is available on site, and technical stops for refueling are possible but costly.
Accommodation at the Icelandair Hotel Natura or Loftleidir is available adjacent to the airport, with rooms often offering views of parked aircraft; booking through the handling agent may provide discounts. Example: double room about €180 per night including breakfast. Car hire is available at the hotel.
Procedures vary; see AIP/NOTAM for operational details. BIRK is valued for its proximity to Reykjavik and efficient services but incurs high costs, especially for customs and handling.
